Back to School

Good afternoon, this is Doris Sellers, Principal of ACRHS.

I hope you and your family stayed safe during the terrible storm Tuesday evening and can enjoy the last few days before our start to school on Monday.  I wanted to send a few reminders as you prepare for the start of school.

Tomorrow, Thursday, August 19 will be our new student and rising 9th grade student orientation. To exhibit caution and allow for less crowding in our hallways of students and families, we will modify our orientation format this year.  Students may come in and find their classes according to the following schedule:  new students should arrive by last names alphabet A-G from 12:00noon – 12:45pm, from 1:00-1:45pm students whose last names begin with H-P, and 2:00-2:45pm will be students whose last names begin with Q-Z.  Since we will not be holding a large group information orientation, there will be a ZOOM Parent Q and A from 6:00-7:00pm Thursday evening, August 19.  Please see the ZOOM link on our school FaceBook or website.  During the Thursday afternoon tours to find your classes and meet your teachers, we will have representatives set up from PTSO, Boosters, Child Nutrition, and Transportation to assist you with questions, you have as you become part of our Rocket family for these next four years.  Again, in order to reduce capacity in our building, we ask only students and parents attend orientation rather than large families and friends.

If you purchased a yearbook and did not pick it up in the drive through pick up on August 5, you will receive your yearbook in your Rocket Power mentor groups on Monday.

Power School Student and Parent Portal is open for review of your schedule prior to new student orientation and returning to school on Monday.  Our Master Schedule has been carefully built around student requests from last Spring’s registration, and please remember that schedule changes will only be done for the following reasons:  if a student is missing a graduation requirement, if there is a hole in the schedule, if a student needs to retake a course that they previously did not pass, or if a student is missing a pre-requisite.  If you have these concerns in your schedules you may email Ms. King at or your school’s counselor prior to the start of school and indicate which of the stated reasons a schedule change needs to be considered.   In addition, if your student did not receive credit for a course last year and would like to take this course in Credit Recovery, please contact your child’s counselor as we have been provided a new position this year with ESSER COVID funds for course recovery students.

I want to say as we return to school, face coverings are required for students, faculty and staff, and visitors.  I am very proud of how our students did in the Spring regarding wearing face coverings and I am sure they will when we start school as well.  I would like to be sure we make our focus on academic learning and work together to make this expectation work in our school. If you believe your child is eligible for a medical exemption for a face covering, please pick up the form from the school that the doctor will need to complete for this exemption.   Again, I thank you for your help in keeping our students and staff safe and our focus on the academic and emotional recovery of our students.

While you are shopping for back to school, please keep in mind our expectations for school dress.   Details will be on our school FaceBook page and website.  We are proud to be Rockets and we show that in many ways, including our clothing worn to school.   Please report to school on Monday, August 23 with basic school supplies.  Teachers will give you any specific needs for their classes on Monday when you have class for the first day.  If you need assistance with clothing or school supplies, please reach out to our school counselors or our social worker, Lauren Ward,   We are here to help all of our students be successful and show their Rocket Pride!

As we prepare for our return to school, please go to the Buncombe County Schools website to find the online child nutrition free/reduced lunch application form.  Please complete this application even though breakfast and lunch will be free to everyone this year so that we can assure that other federal funds that accompany the lunch program that impact student learning and school funding can continue for our school system.   Students with qualifying free/reduced lunch applications can also benefit from occasional EBT cards from North Carolina, free ACT/SAT testing, and fees waived for college applications.

With the return of our students, we will return to our parent drop-off and pick up in the front of our school.  Our upper parking lot will return for student parking.  Parking passes are available for $60 during all lunches the first day of school.  We encourage our students to always drive safely when on campus.  Student arrival should not be prior to 7:30am and to maintain safe COVID protocol, students will report directly to 1st block classes.  Breakfast kiosks will be set up at our student entrances.

I am so excited to soon begin another school year.  I hope our students and their families enjoy these last days of summer and are anticipating a return to school for a successful year at AC Reynolds High School, where we are committed to the success of all students.

Thank you and have a great evening.
