Most young children dream about what they will become as they get older. Before the winter break, elementary students in the Reynolds District saw a glimpse of what they can do in a few short years. The A.C. Reynolds High School Band traveled to Fairview Elementary, Charles C. Bell Elementary, Haw Creek Elementary, and Oakley Elementary for a concert and introduction into the music program.

The band performed a variety of songs and featured solos by different band members. Many of the tunes kept the kids in the audience rocking out. Band Director Sean Smith loves to see the children and staff have fun.

“Every year we get to do this, and it is always such a joy to see the kids and staff singing along,” said Smith. “This year the students were really excited to see us, since we haven’t had the tour in a couple of years.”

The elementary tour is important for all students involved, especially the younger ones.

“It’s a chance for the children to envision what they can achieve if they stay in Buncombe County Schools,” Smith explained. “Plus, they get the opportunity to come back to their old school and see some familiar faces.”

This also gets the students excited about music and interested in instruments they may have never heard of before.

“Some students have never heard the sounds of a Bassoon, French Horn or Bass Clarinet,” he said. “They get really excited to see and hear each instrument.”

All fifth graders in Buncombe County Schools have the opportunity to join band, chorus, or orchestra their sixth grade year. BCS is known for excellent award winning music programs in all six districts.
