Contemporary Artist Research Assignment –

Find a contemporary clay artist who specializes in face jugs, grotesques, or clay figure modeling whose style you would like to emulate. Complete the following criteria:

1.Summarize your findings as a brief presentation in your sketchbook.

2.Create at least one sketch of your favorite piece from the artist.

3. Using your artist inspiration, develop your own design including front & side sketches of the proposed design.  

Grotesque Mug Rubric

Exceptional Level

1.        Slab construction technique, Height 4"-6", Thickness 1/4"-1/2" 

2.        Walls and bottom of vessel are attached cleanly and neatly with no trace of where the attachment occurred, no seams are visible

3.        Smooth outside and inside, no bumps

4.        Rim of vessel has a consistent thickness and has been smoothed out with no rough edges.

5.       Handle is proportionate and complimentary to the cup, and is securely attached.
 
6.       Design includes a heavily exaggerated facial expression in the grotesque motif.

7.        Last name neatly written on the bottom of the piece.

8.        Glaze is evenly applied and compliments the overall design.

 

Proficient Level

 1.       Slab construction technique, Height 4"-6", Thickness 1/4"-1/2"

 2.        Walls are attached neatly with some trace of where the attachment occurred

 3.        Somewhat smooth outside and inside

 4.        Rim has been smoothed, but there may be some rough edges

 5.        Handle is proportionate and securely attached

 6.        Design includes a face, but there is little exaggeration

 7.        Last name written on the bottom of the piece is legible.

 8.        Glaze was applied mostly evenly, but may have some drips and spots that need more glaze.

 

Basic Level

 1.        Slab construction technique, Height 4"-6", Thickness 1/4"-1/2"

 2.        Walls are attached but with clear point of attachment

 3.        Outside and inside aren’t smooth, with many bumpy rough spots

 4.        Rim has not been smoothed there are some rough edges and lots of uneven segments

 5.        Handle is too big or too small, and handle may or may not be secure

 6.        Design considerations not executed well; face has no exaggeration.

 7.        Last name is not on the bottom of the vessel.

 8.        Glaze was applied unevenly and has some drips and spots that need more glaze
