English IV

More than just "the Grad Project class"

English IV is much more than “the NCGP class”. Students will examine fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts to prepare for the NC Final Exam. Focus for fiction will be placed on major British literature found in the textbook (The Language of Literature British Literature, McDougal Littell) and other texts including:

  • Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel
  • The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
  • Macbeth by William Shakespeare

Should you have any questions regarding the reading material and/or would like to request an alternative reading, please contact Doris Sellers, ACR Principal, at 298-2500.

In addition, each student will be expected to complete and pass ALL components of the infamous, often feared, and sometimes reviled NC Graduation Project (NCGP). The NCGP is an intensive semester-long undertaking that requires each senior to:

  1. Write a 5-8 page research paper in correct MLA format
  2. Complete and document 10+ hours of hands-on “practical experience” in the form of volunteering, taking a class, or learning/perfecting a skill under the direct supervision of a mentor
  3. Compile a comprehensive portfolio (binder) with ALL required documentation/photos/signatures
  4. Create and give a 5-8 minute presentation on NCGP Board Night
  5. This requires a visual aid in the form of a GoogleSlides, Prezi, or poster trifold (think science fair board) presentation.
