Instead of sunglasses and beach balls, safety goggles and beakers proved to be the must-have summer accessories at Summer Science Camp.
The camp, designed for rising second through fifth graders, is a family affair for two Buncombe County Schools teachers. Maura Brouwer is a science teacher at A.C. Reynolds High School. Her sister, Sarah Hamilton, teaches science at A.C. Reynolds Middle School.
“We’ve never worked together before,” Brouwer shared. “We discovered we’re really great co-teachers. Sharing this experience with her has been a dream.”
One week of camp was devoted to chemistry, which got a big reaction from students.
“We experimented with solutions and changes in matter, using materials including gummy bears,” said Brouwer.
The scientific siblings devoted a second week to physics, which included campers completing engineering challenges and launching a rocket across the A.C. Reynolds High School football field.
“Sarah and I hope our time with the campers sparked their interest in science, and let them sample the lessons that are ahead for them in middle and high school.”
